Happy birthday to Sudha Ragunathan!

I absolutely love this composition so wanted to show you it too. I learnt this from a recording by Sudha Ragunathan who has recorded a number of compositions that I love. I'd like to release this video on her birthday as my dedication to her!

I've put hours into this video and hope to make more videos in a similar style but with greater improvements in the future.

This is a Ragamalika composition set to Adi thalam. I would say this is raga-based rather than set in Ragas as I did notice a few Anya swaras (notes that fall outside of the rules of ragas) but these notes added an allure to this composition.

I've noticed Mohanakalyani, Hamsathwani, Uthayavichandrika/Sudha Dhanyasi and Revathi. The interludes have been tuned in a way that the transitions between these contrasting ragas are different. 

Mohanakalyani Based:

உன் முகம் காணவும் 

என் முகம் நாடுதே

உள்ளத்தில் எண்ணில்லா ஆசை ஏனோ கண்ணா

Muthai Tharu - முத்தைத்தரு பத்தித் திருநகை - Thirupugal - Ragam Shanmugapriya - Talam Misra Chapu

Thirupugal is a form of devotional music that was originally composed by Arunagirinathar in the 15th Century.

The thirupugal, Muthai Tharu is in praise of Lord Murugan (a Hindu deity) and confers to Pannisai. It is in the carnatic ragam Shanmugapriya and Misra Chapu talam.

Pannisai eventually evolved into Carnatic Music.


This thirupugal was recorded for a Tamil film by TM Sounderajan.

In this video, I'm using a Shruthi box for the drone that repeats three notes.
I also play the carnatic violin here. This instrument is played by resting the scroll between the heel and ankle.

முத்தைத்தரு பத்தித் திருநகை
அத்திக்கிறை சத்திச் சரவண
முத்திக்கொரு வித்திக் குருபன் – எனவோதும்
முக்கட்பர மற்குச் சுருதியின்

so praises Lord SivA, with three eyes (the Sun, the Moon and the Fire-Agni);

He shot an arrow to scatter the ten heads of RAvaNA (RAmAvathAram);

He churned the milky ocean with the incomparable Mount Manthara (KUrmAvathAram);

He hid the Sun with His ChakrA (disc) in daytime making it night (KrishnAvathAram);

the devils in the battlefield danced along with the eagles; 

thikkuppari attap payiravar: 

the eight bhairavAs protecting all directions 

chithrappavu rikku thokkuththoku thokkuth thokuthoku thrikadaka enavOtha: 

choreographed for this unique dance in the meter of 'thokkuththoku thokkuth thokuthoku thrikadaka'; 

koththuppaRai kotta: 

a series of drums were beaten to the same tune; 

kaLamisai muthukUkai: 

in the battlefield, old vultures screamed 

kukkukkuku kukkuk kukukuku kuththipputhai pukkup pidiyena kotputRezha: 

'kukkukkuku kukkuk kukukuku, stab and bury, attack and catch' and they kept revolving around the corpses, flying upwards in circles; 

natpatR RavuNarai vettippali yittu: 

the hostile demons (asuras) were killed en masse; and

their mountain Krounchagiri was shattered into pieces
