This cover is dedicated to Appa! Happy father's day!
I have thought about dedicating a cover to him for a long time but was struggling to find a meaningful song that captured us as well as appreciated by both!
I really enjoyed making this cover of Please Sir from Boys. The original is also A Capella with a range of voices while my rendition uses my voice only with different harmonies. I'm hoping that this will be the first of many solo acapella tracks...
I absolutely love this composition so wanted to show you it too. I learnt this from a recording by Sudha Ragunathan who has recorded a number of compositions that I love. I'd like to release this video on her birthday as my dedication to her!
I've put hours into this video and hope to make more videos in a similar style but with greater improvements in the future.
I'm including the lyrics and rough translations below for reference.
If you would like to see me post carnatic notation, leave a comment on the video.
This is a Ragamalika composition set to Adi thalam. I would say this is raga-based rather than set in Ragas as I did notice a few Anya swaras (notes that fall outside of the rules of ragas) but these notes added an allure to this composition.
I've noticed Mohanakalyani, Hamsathwani, Uthayavichandrika/Sudha Dhanyasi and Revathi. The interludes have been tuned in a way that the transitions between these contrasting ragas are different.
Mohanakalyani Based:
Un mugam kaanavum
En mugam naaduthe
Ullathil ennillaa aasai eno kanna
My face is looking forward to seeing your face (I'm searching for the sight of your face)
In my heart there are numberless (numerous) desires Kanna
Un kuzhal osai
Un kuzhal osaithaan en sevi kedkuthe
Kollaiyai inbam suranpatheno
The sound of your flute is heard by my ears
Why does so much joy come from this?
1. Hamsadhwani Based
Kanniyarkal vinbum kavithol thirandathu
Minnum un surul kesam meni purandathu
Mannungkarunkuzhalil mathiyile vaithu
Pinnayo en nenjam kanna kanna?
Poems were written that won the hearts of young women
Your curly hair that shines, turns with your movements
Could you braid my heart into your dark flute-like hair, Kanna?
2. Udayavichandrika or Sudha dhanyasi Based
Vitha vithamaakave vedikai kaattum
Vathanatil karu vizhikal sularthaaduthe - un
(Antha) Kathai pesum kankalin kaanthattinal
Ennai vathaipathu ennamo
Pathaippathu nenjamo
Your dark eyes are rolling on the face that plays a variety of antics
How do you kill me with the your attractive eyes that tell stories
My heart beats fast, are you trying to kill me?
3. Revati Based
Kaalamellam unnakai kaathirunthen
Enthan kazhitharu meniyum veenpogirathe
Kolamaathava kopala ennai
Koodidal ennaalo naadum ap ponnaalo
Through the ages, I have waited for you
My body is being wasted and turning to dust
Kola maathavaa, Kopaala...
Will the golden day that we meet ever arrive- I look forward to then.
Merry Christmas! Here's a multilingual cover to celebrate in many languages.
This cover represents three songs originally performed by Anuradha Sriram under the music direction of AR Rahman. The melody is based in Anantha Bhairavi raga which has an endearing effect. The details of the original songs can be found under the page for Minsara Kanavu.
I added rough translations of the Tamil version for the English lyrics.
