Chinnan Chiru Kiliye சின்னஞ்சிறு கிளியே கண்ணம்மா - Ragamalika - Bharathiyar - Long version

On the occasion of Bharathiyar's 100 year death anniversary, I've performed the long version of his popular Ragamalika, Chinnan Chiru Kiliye.

Bharathiyar is an example of an open minded individual. Throughout his life he was inspired by others and conveyed great messages through his works.

This particular song was originally meant to be in Bhairavi however it is popular in it's multi raga form.

Though this song is said to describe Bharathi's feelings for a child, he has employed double-meanings which may indicate his wife, Chellamma. They were both married at a young age.

It took me time to hunt down and learn the full version and I'm glad I was able to learn this and hopefully pass it on to more people.

This is my first video where I accompany my singing with the keyboard.

I'm including rough translations and rough notations which can be used as guides.

I've recorded this song using just my phone mic/camera and one take with chords worked out today to give it an authentic vibe.

I have thought about dedicating a cover to him for a long time but was struggling to find a meaningful song that captured us as well as appreciated by both!

This song originally appears in a South Indian movie called Yennai Arindhal. It also has a Telugu version. There is another song in the same film which is set on a couple which the same melody called Idhayathil Yetho Ondru this one also has a Telugu counterpart

The music was composed by Harris Jeyaraj while the lyrics were written by Thamarai. It was sung by Benny Dayal and Mahathi.

Unakkenna Venum Sollu Tamil Lyrics and English Translation

Unakkenna venum sollu

Ulagaththai kaatta sollu

Pudhu idam pudhu megam

Thaedi povomey.

Tell me what you want.

Ask the world to show this.

Let’s look out for new places and new clouds.

Pidiththadhai vaanga sollu

Veruppadhai neenga sollu

Pudhu vellam pudhu aaru

Neendhi paarpomey.

Tell me to buy you what you like.

Tell me to avoid the things I hate.

We’ll try swimming in

New puddles and lakes.

Iruvarin pagal iravu

Oru veyil oru nilavu.

Therindhadhu theriyadhadhu

Paarkkaporomey.

Both people (context of father and daughter) through night and day see

One sun and one moon.

We’re going to discover the known and the unknown.

Ulagennum paramapadham

Vilundha pin uyarvu varum

Ninaiththadhu ninaiyaadhadhu

Serkkaporomey.

The world is full of snake and ladders

After we fall, we’ll rise.

We’re going accomplish what we thought was possible and impossible.

Oru velli kolusu pola

Indha boomi sinungum keela.

Aniyaadha vairam pola

Andha vaanam minungum Mela.

Like a silver anklet

This earth will dance under your feet.

Like an unworn diamond,

That sky will shine from up above.

Kanavugal theerndhaal indru

Kalangida koodaadhindru

Dhinam dhinam ninaivu vandhu

Thoonga solliyadhe.

My own dreams faded away,

Yet everyday, memories of you came

Asking me to sleep

To prevent me from falling apart

Enakkena unnai thandhu

Unakkiru kannai thandhu

Adhan vazhi enadhu kanaa

Kaana solliyadhey.

I was given you.

You were given two eyes through which

I could have dreams for you.

Nee adam pidiththaalum

Adangi pogindren.

Unmadi meththai Mel

Madangi kolgindren.

Even if you behave in a stubborn way

I let go of my ego for you

I lie down calmly in the pillow of your lap

Paruvangal maarivara

Varudangal odi Vida.

Ilandha en inimaigalai

Unnil kandaeney.

As the seasons changes

As the years run by

I saw my lost innocence in you.

Ezhdhidum un viralil

Sirithidum un idhalil

Kadandha en kavidhaigalai

Kandu kondeney.

In your fingers that wrote

On your lips that smile

I saw the poetry of my past

Thuruvangal pol neelum

Idaiveli andru ohhh.

Thozhgalil un moochu

Ilaigiradhindru.

There was an emotional distance between us

In the past.

However these days, we’re closer as you breath is felt on my shoulders.

Unakenna venum sollu

Ulagaththai kaatta sollu

Pudhu idam pudhu megam

Thaedi povomey.

Tell me what you need.

Ask the world to show itself.

We will go ahead to seek new places and new clouds

Pidiththadhai vaanga sollu

Veruppadhai neenga sollu

Pudhu vellam pudhu aaru

Neendhi paarpomey.

Ask me to buy you what you like.

Ask me to stay away from what I hate.

We will cross together and discover

New rivers and lakes

Iruvarin pagal iravu

Oru veyil oru nilavu.

Therindhadhu theriyadhadhu

Paarkkaporomey.

Here are two people’s daydreams

One sun and one moon

We are going to discover the known and the unknown

Ulagennum paramapadham

Vilundha pin uyarvu varum

Ninaiththadhu ninaiyaadhadhu

Serkkaporomey.

The world is full of snake and ladders

After we fall or see failure, we go to a new height

We are going to unite what we thought was possible and impossible

Oru velli kolusu pola

Indha boomi sinungum keela.

Aniyaadha vairam pola

Andha vaanam minungum Mela

Like the silver trinket

This earth will dance under your feet.

Like a diamond that one cannot possess

That sky will shine from up above.

I really enjoyed making this cover of Please Sir from Boys. The original is also A Capella with a range of voices while my rendition uses my voice only with different harmonies. I'm hoping that this will be the first of many solo acapella tracks...

Original song credits:

Music Director: A. R. Rahman
Lyricist: Vaali
Singers: Kunal GanjawalaClinton CerejoS. P. B. Charan
Chinmayi

Telugu and Hindi versions of this song were also released.

The lyrics in the cover:

Un Mugam Kanavum Ragamalika - உன் முகம் காணவும் இராகமாலிகை - Dedicated to Sudha Ragunathan

Happy birthday to Sudha Ragunathan!

I absolutely love this composition so wanted to show you it too. I learnt this from a recording by Sudha Ragunathan who has recorded a number of compositions that I love. I'd like to release this video on her birthday as my dedication to her!

I've put hours into this video and hope to make more videos in a similar style but with greater improvements in the future.

I'm including the lyrics and rough translations below for reference.

If you would like to see me post carnatic notation, leave a comment on the video.

Un Mugam Kanavum Ragamalika -

Written by Dr Winston Panchacharam

Music interludes tuned by K.S. Ragunathan

This is a Ragamalika composition set to Adi thalam. I would say this is raga-based rather than set in Ragas as I did notice a few Anya swaras (notes that fall outside of the rules of ragas) but these notes added an allure to this composition.

I've noticed Mohanakalyani, Hamsathwani, Uthayavichandrika/Sudha Dhanyasi and Revathi. The interludes have been tuned in a way that the transitions between these contrasting ragas are different.

Mohanakalyani Based:

Un mugam kaanavum

En mugam naaduthe

Ullathil ennillaa aasai eno kanna

My face is looking forward to seeing your face (I'm searching for the sight of your face)

In my heart there are numberless (numerous) desires Kanna

Un kuzhal osai

Un kuzhal osaithaan en sevi kedkuthe

Kollaiyai inbam suranpatheno

The sound of your flute is heard by my ears

Why does so much joy come from this?

1. Hamsadhwani Based

Kanniyarkal vinbum kavithol thirandathu

Minnum un surul kesam meni purandathu

Mannungkarunkuzhalil mathiyile vaithu

Pinnayo en nenjam kanna kanna?

Poems were written that won the hearts of young women

Your curly hair that shines, turns with your movements

Could you braid my heart into your dark flute-like hair, Kanna?

2. Udayavichandrika  or Sudha dhanyasi Based

Vitha vithamaakave vedikai kaattum

Vathanatil karu vizhikal sularthaaduthe - un

(Antha) Kathai pesum kankalin kaanthattinal

Ennai vathaipathu ennamo

Pathaippathu nenjamo

Your dark eyes are rolling on the face that plays a variety of antics

How do you kill me with the your attractive eyes that tell stories

My heart beats fast, are you trying to kill me?

3. Revati Based

Kaalamellam unnakai kaathirunthen

Enthan kazhitharu meniyum veenpogirathe

Kolamaathava kopala ennai

Koodidal ennaalo naadum ap ponnaalo

Through the ages, I have waited for you

My body is being wasted and turning to dust

Kola maathavaa, Kopaala...

Will the golden day that we meet ever arrive- I look forward to then.
