Velli Kulikkum - வெள்ளி குளிக்கும் - Earth Day

Happy Earth Day!

The song struck something in me as soon as I started listening to it. The imagery of the lyrics coupled with the melody sends chills and connects me to a peaceful state of mind.

I wanted to perform this song here so more people can find out about this wonderful gem.

Antha Sivagami Maganidam அந்த சிவகாமி மகனிடம்

This is an alluring melody is set to the Raga Pilu. Another song I have covered in this ragam is Vannam konda vennilave. There is a feeling of longing and both songs sound like the feeling of missing a loved one.

Sung by P.Suseela and TMS. Music by Govardhanam. Lyrics were written by Kannadasan.

Kannadasan, who wanted to join the Indian National Congress was waiting for the acceptance from the then Congress President K. Kamaraj, which made him to write the lines "Antha Sivagami maganidam seithi cholladi, ennai serum naal parka cholladi, veru yeverodum naan pesa vaarthai yethadi" (Tell Sivagami's son to fix the date to enrol me), indirectly referring to Kamaraj, whose mother's name was Sivagami.

This song appeared in the Tamil film Pattanathil Bhootham in 1967.

Kurai Onrum Illai குறை ஒன்றும் இல்லை Vocal Violin

Happy birthday to M.S. Subbulakshmi!

This ragamalika composition (blended scales) is the first Ragamalika that I taught myself. I couldn't have done it without the legendary M.S. Subbulakshmi's rendition of Kurai Onrum Illai.

She is known as one of Carnatic female trinity.

This is the only Carnatic composition of C. Rajagopalachari and was popularised by MSS which is why I'm dedicating this rendition to her.

I have already covered Kaatrinile Varum Geetham on this blog which she sang in the 1940s!

I found a wikipedia article and various other articles like one from 2002 linked with the translation that explains the interesting context of the song. The meaning can also be ironic while also being thankful.
