The song struck something in me as soon as I started listening to it. The imagery of the lyrics coupled with the melody sends chills and connects me to a peaceful state of mind.
I wanted to perform this song here so more people can find out about this wonderful gem.
I hope you enjoy this and let me know of your thoughts in the comments.
Velli Kulikkum Lyrics and Translation
Transliterated and translated by Abiramy Logeswaran (World Music Abi) Ragam: Baageshri
This ragamalika composition (blended scales) is the first Ragamalika that I taught myself. I couldn't have done it without the legendary M.S. Subbulakshmi's rendition of Kurai Onrum Illai.
She is known as one of Carnatic female trinity.
This is the only Carnatic composition of C. Rajagopalachari and was popularised by MSS which is why I'm dedicating this rendition to her.
I found a wikipedia article and various other articles like one from 2002 linked with the translation that explains the interesting context of the song. The meaning can also be ironic while also being thankful.
Hope you enjoy my debut single in collaboration with DipakC.
I met Dipak during my time at university when we performed together. I was really impressed with how he could play the piano by ear. He has taught himself so much and is a wonderful collaborator to work with.
He contacted me during the pandemic and intiated our collaboration with a track he had already made. I asked him to wait until I was ready to commit to the project and I'm thankful for his patience. I put together a few vocal tracks which Dipak then selected and together, we're telling the story of the inner voice. We had several back and forths for mastering, We had a lack of coordination in our schedule to make the music video so after confirming the ideas were okay with Dipak, I went ahead with producing the music video for our collaboration.
A few words from Dipak:
It's been a real pleasure working with Abi. She's such a talented vocalist and delivered exactly what I envisioned! I wanted a chant/abstract vocal repetition at the beginning which continued through the track and Abi provide what you hear at the start and I was blown away at the accuracy of what I wanted vs what was delivered.
The first set of vocals were great and allowed me to snip and cut bits of the vocals and place them in certain places to give rise to varying textures of the track. When snipping, sometimes the vocals were distorted due to my errors and Abi was more than happy to record them again which we have used in this final track. I'm so glad I waited for Abi to be available to record this as the wait definitely paid off with Inner Voice - I couldn't be happier with it!
Here's an interesting fact: we did not meet in person at all to record this track or video!
How did this track make you feel?
Please let me know in the comments!
The lyrics are rhythmic syllables found in Carnatic and Hindustani music.
I absolutely love Dharmavathi. It a wonderful raga perfect for this composition by Ambujam Krishna. You may have heard Kuzhaloothi manamellaam which was also composed by her.
I have added the subtitles directly onto youtube so you would be able to go into the video settings to switch them on and off.
What I love about some carnatic music especially the pieces composed in Tamil is that I'm able to understand the beautiful poetry. I've made an effort to translate this across so you can get an essence.
This song basically professes love for a deity in the form of Kannan and the desperation of love is
Tamil and English Lyrics and English Translation:
I came running to you my dear

ஓடோடி வந்தேன் கண்ணா நான்
Since I came to know the relationship between you and me

The Gopis gather to see the beauty of Kannan playing the flute
Ambakarunai Purivai is a beautiful composition in - AnandaBhairavi - Adi. Lyrics were written by Sirkali Govindarajan while Nila Ramamurti composed this.
Today is Sirkazhi Govindarajan's birthday and he is known for his emotive voice in 20th century tamil devotional music as well as Tamil cinema music.
Nila Ramamurthi is the eldest daughter of Papanasam Sivan and I would like to know more about her.
The ragam Ananda Bhairavi is said to be helpful for soothing pain. I find it to be one of the most cheerful ragas to listen to that gives me hope.
I'm playing the carnatic violin here: Kandanaal Muthalai which is a Patham in Adi Talam and Ragam Mathuvanti. The Composer is N. S. Chidambaram. This carnatic composition was also featured in a Tamil film of a similar name, Kanda Naal Muthal.
This is a romantic song for the God Murugan. I've enjoyed singing and playing this piece on various occasions.

English translation
Pallavi
Since the day I saw the son of Lord Shiva,
Who is merciful and holds the Vel,
My love for him is growing.
Anupallavi
In the pretty garden where the bees sing,
The Kandha (God) who came and gave me pleasure
Charanam
My mind has not forgotten the blue peacock,
The affection mixed with love has not vanished,
The pretty Murugan has filled the temple of my mind,
And he shows his slight smile and puts the flowers in my hair.

Ever since I heard this song, I kept playing it on repeat, I’ve linked the original song and the stories behind it in my blog which you can find the description.
‘Ennul Inikkum Inbame’ speaks of the omniscient, omnipresent power that is felt.
On this song, the creators commented, "We were left with the overwhelming feeling that this album, although already so diverse and multifaceted in nature, needed just a little something more to amp it up. Ennul Inikkum Inbame is the product of this feeling."
"Inspired by Qawwali music, a huge source of inspiration and knowledge for us both, Ennul Inikkum Inbame is the first independent Qawwali-inspired Tamizh song, and we’re super thrilled to share it with you! Featuring some of our favourite musicians, Saurabh Joshi, Rohith Jayaraman, Sreerag, Sayee and Abinandan, this is the song that we found to be a fitting end to the album, and we really hope you feel the same."
"Abinandan David is the second guitarist on the EP. Rithu Vysakh is a strings player, composer, musician from Kerala. The violins in ‘Ennul Inikkum Inbame’ were played by Sayee Rakshith. MT Aditya Srinivasan is an incredibly diverse percussionist from Chennai. Saurabh Joshi is an accomplished multi-percussionist and sound engineer hailing from Dehradun."
‘Ennul Inikkum Inbame’ was mixed and mastered by Saurabh Joshi.
Tamil is a beautiful language, the lyrics of this song encourage people to pay their respects to it. I learnt this song from my teacher, Vinothini Barathan.
If you have listened to Carnatic music, the melody might be familiar. This is because the lyrics have been tuned to the melody of Bho Shambo which is set to Revathi Ragam. The song that this melody was originally composed for praises Lord Shiva. It was composed by Dayanantha Saraswathi.
The Lyrics:
This video features a song that describes the beauty of music and how it can affect the world.
This song is from the 1972 film, Thavapudhalavan. This was originally sung by T. M. Soundararajan. Lyrics were written by Kannadasan. Music was directed by M. S. Vishwanathan.
It is based in Kalyani Raga which brings joy to people. This is known as the Lydian Mode.
As this is an Acapella cover, I have used multiple tracks to create the melody, drone and the rhythm.
1/2 tracks for the main melody
1/2 tracks for the harmonies
2 tracks for the drone Sa and Pa
0/1 track for the clapping which I did instead of konnakol or a percussion instrument.
1 track for the thakkathina thom repeating theme.

On the occasion of Bharathiyar's 100 year death anniversary, I've performed the long version of his popular Ragamalika, Chinnan Chiru Kiliye.
Bharathiyar is an example of an open minded individual. Throughout his life he was inspired by others and conveyed great messages through his works.
This particular song was originally meant to be in Bhairavi however it is popular in it's multi raga form.
Though this song is said to describe Bharathi's feelings for a child, he has employed double-meanings which may indicate his wife, Chellamma. They were both married at a young age.
It took me time to hunt down and learn the full version and I'm glad I was able to learn this and hopefully pass it on to more people.
This is my first video where I accompany my singing with the keyboard.
I'm including rough translations and rough notations which can be used as guides.
